A few days later, Doris Zeul sighed with relief at the sound of the lunch bell. She had been training with her new mentor every afternoon. The extra energy she had to put into being nice and staying calm meant her appetite had gone through the roof. She couldn’t wait to sit in gloomy silence and eat her lunch.

But as Doris turned the corner into the cafeteria, she saw the last two faces she wanted to see—Diana Prince and her weird cousin Phil. Ugh.

“My favorite mentee!” Diana cheered. “I invite you to sit with my friends this lunch period.”

“But…” Doris made eye contact with Barbi Minerva, who was sitting at a table with Carol Ferris and Leslie Willis. Barbi rolled her finger as if to say, “Keep things rolling.” Doris was getting used to reading these clues from her new ally. She had to eat with Diana. Ugh.

“Next to me!” Diana said. Doris sat down and looked around at the other girls uncomfortably. Kara Danvers, Barbara Gordon, Zee Zatara, Jessica Cruz, and Karen Beecher were all staring back at her. They didn’t trust her, she could tell. The feeling was mutual.

But Diana couldn’t know that. Doris tried to smile.

“I believe we should take our mentorship to the next level,” Diana was saying. “We could do some good by volunteering at the animal shelter together. Or perhaps assist in cleaning up the park.”

More work? Doris was already spending all her free time trying to beat Diana Prince at her own game. How much of her life was she going to have to spend pretending to be nice? “I don’t know…”

“And even better, we can both don these!” Diana held up two pairs of socks as though they were trophies. They were the same—blue with white stars. She handed one pair to Doris, who stared at them, stunned.
